Water Experiment

Morah Mimi: Today we're going to be doing an experiment with these gloves.
What is an experiment?
Jordan: When you mix ingredients together.
Hannah: When you want to see what's going to happen.
Morah Mimi: That's right.  We use all kinds of things or ingredients to learn about what will happen with them.  We observe/ watch and work with the materials we have.
I pass around the gloves filled with water and ask the children to look at and feel them
and report back on what they felt and observed.

It feels cold.  Notice what Hannah does with the gloves next.

It took a few changes to get it to the perfect position.

It feels like water.  Notice the next picture.

It was amazing to watch each child go through the same observation.
They felt the gloves and worked on getting them to the right position for their hands to match.
I specifically used the gloves because of it's relevance to this season.
..and it was a great opportunity for them to integrate this skill so naturally.

Amanda points to it: It's squishy.
Chana: It's jiggely.
Jordan: It feels like cold water.

Morah Mimi:
What do you thing will happen if we put one into the freezer?
Sammy:  It will get very cold!!!!
Jordan: It will get hard!
Hannah: It will freeze!
The children place it in the freezer.

 The next day we take the glove out of the freezer to discover that it froze
and turned into a ice (a solid).

Morah Mimi: Why did this happen in the freezer?
Children: Because it's very cold.
The freezer freezes:)
Morah Mimi: Let's go back to the class to see the new thermometer I brought.

Morah Mimi showed us the the new thermometer we put into our class window.
Some of the children recalled when their mom used a smaller version to see if they had fever.
Morah Mimi explained that a weather thermometer measures the temperature outside so that we know what it is.
We recognized some of the numbers: 0,1,2,3 etc.
Morah Mimi explained what the 0 at the end does to the numbers.

We went to the computer in the office to see a thermometer on line which shows the weather patterns as it's moved around.
We saw that at 32 degrees water can freeze.
It was fun to see what happens when it's 70 or 80 degrees.
We saw people swimming at the beach.

We went back to the room to check out the
temperature.
Morah Mimi also took us to the freezer and she showed us the temperature set at 0...so so cold to keep the food frozen.

We also filled balloons for a snowman.

The children were so fascinated to see that they predicted
correctly.

The next day we left them out together with the iced glove to experience at the water table.
Morah Mimi: Who'd like to form a snowman
Children: Me, me, me
Morah Mimi: What do you think will happen if we leave it in the water table
Hannah: It will melt!
Children: It will get all wet!
Morah Mimi: Let's see!

We sang our snowman song:
I'm a little snowman short and fat
This is my broomstick, this is my hat
When the sun comes out
I melt away!
OOPS I'm a puddle.

The children were so happy to see their predictions come to real life.
